A Major Court Decision Makes Headlines

Nine years after the class action was filed, the Quebec Superior Court rendered a historic judgment ordering the Quebec government to pay over $164 million in damages. This decision recognizes the systemic violations of constitutional rights of approximately 24,000 people detained without appearing before a judge within legal deadlines.

In 2016, our firm accepted a major mandate: to represent the thousands of citizens whose fundamental rights had been violated by a failing judicial system. The class action aimed to challenge the legality of detaining people without appearing before a judge within 24 hours, particularly during weekends and holidays.

This legal victory, which establishes compensation of $7,000 per affected person, generated significant media coverage throughout Quebec. Here is an overview of the main press articles that reported on this landmark decision.
